Chosen Children

Each of our children is a gift, yet sometimes in the middle of all the crazy we can lose sight of that simple truth. Are we seeing them for who God made them to be? “She [Moses’s mom] saw that he was a special baby and kept him hidden for three months.” Exodus 2:2 (NLT)

The fate of an entire nation depended on this mother’s ability to recognize and respond to God’s call on the life of her child.

Moses’ mother discerned that he was a special child and courageously risked everything to protect, prepare, and set him apart for the purposes God had for him. Not only did she do this for Moses, but she also passed on a legacy of courage and dedication to her other two children, Miriam and Aaron, as well.

At a young age, Miriam’s mother trusted her to watch over her baby brother in his floating basket. Her mother passed on the gift of wisdom and discernment so she would know when and what to speak to Pharaoh’s daughter. In Miriam we see a life marked by courage, wisdom, strength, and bold worship.

Aaron became the voice of Moses and God, courageously speaking when Moses was afraid to. We see him standing in the gap and filling in for his brother’s shortcomings, as well as those of an entire nation as their first priest.

All three of these siblings had their share of weaknesses and failures. But more than that, they were set apart and trained to lead a nation into freedom and victory. They failed sometimes, but they got back up and returned to their God. And behind them is a mother’s discerning and courageous heart, which impacted the course of history.

Precious mama, your children are also special. They were born with a heavenly purpose on their lives. Galatians 1:15 (ICB) says, “God had special plans for me even before I was born. So he called me through his grace.” In John 17:18 (MSG), Jesus confirms this in his prayer: “In the same way that you gave me a mission in the world, I give them a mission in the world.” 

And you, mama, have been chosen to be the one to courageously protect, train up, and set your children apart to fulfill the mission God has for them. 

How?

Begin by teaching your children that they’ve been chosen by God to impact the world. 

God says his words will “not come back empty-handed. They’ll do the work I sent them to do, they’ll complete the assignment I gave them” (Isaiah 55:11, MSG). Begin to declare God’s Word over them, reminding them that they have “come to the kingdom for such a time as this” (Esther 4:14, NKJV). Teach them that if they have faith, they “can even say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen” (Matthew 21:21, NLT). Proclaim that God’s plans for them are “much, much more than anything we can ask or imagine” (Ephesians 3:20, NCV).

May we, like Moses’ mother, recognize and courageously respond to God’s call on the lives of our children—for them and for all those who will depend on them one day.

I’ve found one of the very best ways to do this over the years is to point them to God’s promises over and over again. We can never start too early. And it’s never too late.
