Prayers for the School Year

Prayers for the School Year

It’s the beginning of the school year, and I have so many hopes and desires for my children’s year. I want it to be a year of learning, yes, but I also want so much more. I want this to be a year in which my children grow spiritually, not just physically and educationally. I want my children to know God better and trust Him more this year.

I’ve written out this Scripture-based prayer, and I will be praying it for each of my kids. Please do the same! There is nothing that can prepare our children better than us bathing them in prayer!

Lord, please be with ________ during this new year of learning. Give my child a heart willing to listen to instruction (Proverbs 1:5). May my child know that strength for both the easy parts of learning and the hard parts come from you (Philippians 4:13). Help my child lean into what is right and good. We know that knowledge comes from teachers, but wisdom and understanding comes from you (Job 12:13).

Lord, I know this year my child will face challenges—we live in a world of sinful people. I pray that your Spirit with help ___________ not be timid, but will give my child power, love and self-discipline (1 Timothy 1:7).

Lord, please help _________ understand the unique talents and gifts you’ve put deep inside him/her. You are the one who put my child together within the womb. May my child understand the wonder of the way you created him/her. May my child celebrate differences, instead of wanting to be just like everyone else (Psalm 139:13-14).

Lord, please help _________ be a leader among peers. May my child trust in you with all his/her heart and because of that may he/she know your will and your path in all he/she does (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Lord, please help _______ look to you and be confident. Keep his/her foot from being caught in the traps of this world (Proverbs 3:26).

Lord, I thank you for the good work that you began in ______. May you continue this good work until the day it is finally finished on the day of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:6)

Lord, I pray that through this school year that worries will not overtake ________. I pray he/she will not worried about tomorrow, for each day has enough concerns of its own (Matthew 6:34).

Lord, fill _________ with courage this year. May he/she not be afraid or discouraged, knowing you are with him/her wherever he/she goes.

Finally, Lord, help __________ to be patient and kind. Help him/her not to envy, boast or be proud (1 Corinthians 13:4). But instead may the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control rule in his/her heart this year (Galatians 5:22-23). Amen.

Consider praying this at least once a week during the school year. How wonderful it is that we can go before God in prayer!

Blessings,

Tricia Goyer
